Zines 101

What is a Zine?

A zine is a self-published booklet that falls somewhere between a newsletter and a magazine. The sizes can range but most commonly you see a half sheet size or a 1/8 sheet size. Since they are self-published and reproduced by hand most zines have a very limited run, typically less than 100.

The zine lineage can be traced back to sci-fi fanzines of the 1930-60s. The 1970s saw the rise of punk zines with information about the bands and secret show locations. The 80-90s ushered in a zine explosion with topics including feminism, gender, sex, technology, hacking, anarchy, sexual orientation; the topics were endless. In the mid-late 1990s the future of zine culture was uncertain with the advent of the internet, and blogs replacing print media.

In there last decade there has been a resurgence in the zine culture for many reasons. There is an overall internet fatigue that fuels interest in analog media forms. Also, the political climate in the country has reenergized counter-culture efforts. The circulation of fake news has breathed new life into speaking one's truth in a self-publication.

Why Make a Zine?

Zine’s are your own personal soapbox that you have 100% control over. In a world where algorithms decide what we see and when we see it, it is refreshing to know that you can make a statement and hand it to someone for them to read. It is that simple and pure.

Making a zine takes time, but it is a wonderful creative outlet for you to sort your thoughts and feelings about any topic that is on your mind that you are passionate about.

You can make a zine about pretty much anything. Personal zines or perzines are about personal thoughts and experiences, Photozines that are mainly image-oriented. There are horror zines, sci-fi zines, resistance zines, music, you name it. Any topic you love or has meaning for you in is fair game.
